Peter Lehmann

Biography:

Dr. Peter Lehmann joined the faculty of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Sam Houston State University in 2019. He received a B.A. in sociology from Furman University his M.S. and Ph.D. in criminology from Florida State University. Having a broad interest in social control, his research focuses on extralegal disparities in punishment, criminal court decision-making and sentencing, juvenile justice and delinquency, school discipline, and public opinion on crime and criminal justice. Some of his recent work explores the interactive effects of defendant and case characteristics on criminal sentencing outcomes, the transfer of juvenile offenders to the adult criminal court, and racial and ethnic disparities in the collateral consequences of justice system contact. He also has studied the effects of economic insecurity, racial animus, fear of crime, and a variety of other factors on punitive sentiments among members of the public both in the U.S. and abroad. His research has appeared in Justice Quarterly, Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, Crime & Delinquency, Punishment & Society, Criminal Justice and Behavior, Journal of Criminal Justice, and Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice, among other journals.
